Our founder, Joe Penland first began to put timbers together to form mats in the early 1970's. While working as an iron worker, he quickly saw the need for a solution to the problem of on-site work stoppages after heavy rains. After the industry initially started using loose lumber to build up the road beds and work surface, Mr. Penland realized that using pre-assembled mats would be easier, cleaner, less costly and work much better.Shortly after Mr. Penland began to fashion the first mats in his backyard, the matting idea caught hold, sparking an entire industry that served customers in nearly every sector of construction and transportation.Based in Beaumont, Texas, Quality Mat has grown into one of the largest mat producers in the world and is one of the oldest companies in the business–we've been there since the beginning.Today, our annual mat production exceeds 250,000 and our products carry exclusive patents that serve a variety of major industries.Ever since those early days in Nederland, Texas, Quality Mat has been innovating new products and construction techniques. We've expanded our facility to ten times the size of what it was two decades ago.
