Our founder, Joe Penland first began to put timbers together to form mats in the early 1970's. With the idea that pre-assembled mats of timbers would work much better than loose lumber, Mr. Penland began to fashion the first mats in his backyard to help crane operators gain access over soft soils.
It didn't take long for the matting idea to catch hold, sparking an entire industry to serve customers in nearly every sector of construction and transportation.
Today, Quality Mat is the largest producer of mats and one of the oldest companies in the business–we've been there since the beginning.
Quality Mat Company was formed in 1974 by Mr. Penland to provide temporary roads and work surfaces for construction sites. Based in Beaumont, Texas, Quality Mat has grown into the largest mat producer in the world. Today, our annual mat production exceeds 150,000 and our products carry exclusive patents that serve a variety of major industries.
In 1980, Quality Mat Company developed the idea of an interlocking mat system that is pre-assembled for rapid installation and de-installation. The mat is made from Southern hardwoods (primarily oak) and then assembled as either 2-ply, 3-ply or parallel lumber units.
These products have revolutionized the matting industry and provide key advantages over the conventional loose lumber surfaces. First, they provide increased stability and smoothness. The interlocking design distributes weight and transfers shock over a large surface area and keeps the mats from slipping or sinking under heavy loads.
Second, the mats save our customers money because of the reduced time it takes to lay down and remove them at a job site, their improved durability and longevity over other matting proucts and the increased protection they provide to equipment and the environment.
